PURPOSE

The purpose of this privacy policy is to explain how Safari and Me (“we/us/our”) obtains, uses and discloses your personal information, in accordance with the requirements of the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (“POPIA”).

Your privacy is important to us. We are committed to protecting your privacy in accordance with POPIA and undertake to ensure that your personal information which is collected by us is used properly, lawfully, transparently and ethically.

IMPORTANT DEFINITIONS TO NOTE RELATING TO THE IMPLEMENTATION OF POPIA

• “Consent” means any voluntary, specific and informed expression of will in terms of which permission is given for the processing of personal information;

• “Data Subject” means the person to whom the personal information relates;

• “Direct Marketing” means to approach a data subject, either in person or by mail, including electronic communication, for the direct or indirect purposes of –

(a) promoting or offering to supply, in the ordinary course of business, any goods or services to the data subject; or 

(b) requesting the data subject to make a donation of any kind for any reason.

• “Person” means a natural person or a juristic person;

• “Personal Information” means information relating to an identifiable, living, natural person, and where applicable, an identifiable, existing juristic person, including but not limited to – 

(a) information relating to the race, gender, sex, pregnancy, marital status, national, ethnic or social origin, colour, sexual orientation, age, physical or mental health, well-being, disability, religion, conscience, belief, culture, language and birth of the person;

(b) information relating to the education or the medical, financial, criminal or employment history of the person;

(c) any identifying number, symbol, e-mail address, physical address, telephone number, location information, online identifier or other particular assignment to the person;

(d) the biometric information of the person;

(e) the personal opinions, views or preferences of the person;

(f) correspondence sent by the person that is implicitly or explicitly of a private or confidential nature or further correspondence that would reveal the contents of the original correspondence;

(g) the views or opinions of another individual about the person; and

(h) the name of the person if it appears with other personal information relating to the person or if the disclosure of the name itself would reveal information about the person.

• “Promotion of Access to Information Act” means the Promotion of Access to Information Act 2 of 2000;

• “Special personal information” means personal information as referred to in section 26 of POPIA;

COMMENTS/ SUBSCRIBE 

When you subscribe to our newsletter there is always an option to unsubscribe at any point

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymised string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

MEDIA

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

COOKIES

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you visit our login page, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

EMBEDDED CONTENT FROM OTHER WEBSITES

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

WHO WE SHARE YOUR DATA WITH

If you request a password reset, your IP address will be included in the reset email.

Your email address is held as part of a database for newsletter distribution, you can however unsubscribe at any point. The data is used for that sole purpose and will not be shared elsewhere. It is stored in a Mailerlite database.

We may also disclose your information where we have a duty or right to do so in terms of the law or other industry code, or where we believe it is necessary to protect our rights.

HOW LONG WE RETAIN YOUR DATA

Data is retained until such time that the customer wishes to unsubscribe or communicated directly to the business to remove from the data base or the closure of the business by which the data will be deleted accordingly. 

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

WHAT RIGHTS YOU HAVE OVER YOUR DATA

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes. When such data subject request is made, please be aware that we will be required to follow certain internal procedures to verify the identity of the person requesting the update, correction or deletion.

You have the right to unsubscribe from newsletters and the removal of your data from the database at anytime. 

WHERE YOUR DATA IS SENT

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.

Data will be kept on Mailerlite for newsletter distribution, it will remain in a Mailerlite account and can be deleted upon request at anytime.
